Keeping families and communities “gun safe”

Welcome to Gun Safe Homes, a community resource for fostering safe firearm practices within neighborhoods and homes. Keeping families and communities safe through responsible firearm ownership is our purpose – empowering them with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent accidents, abuse, mishandling of guns and encourage communities to certify their neighborhoods as “gun safe”.

At Gun Safe Homes, we believe that communities can best protect themselves through engagement and collaboration with one another across households, blocks, neighborhoods, and school districts. So we are devising tooling to enable each homeowner to certify their home as gun-safe, and canvas their neighborhoods to get other homeowners to do the same.

Our mission is to promote open dialogue and provide accessible information to help communities develop effective safety measures and certify themselves as “Gun Safe”. From secure storage solutions to proper handling techniques, we are ensuring households can promise their neighbors, schools and communities they’ve taken the right steps to instill confidence and peace of mind around safe gun practices.

Join us in creating safer environments for ourselves and our loved ones. Explore our website, engage with our community, and together, let’s build a culture of responsible firearm ownership and safety.

How it Works

Our solution provides households the ability to register their homes as “Gun Safe”. When all homes on a block are marked “Gun Safe”, the block becomes “Gun Safe”. When all blocks in a school district are marked “Gun Safe”, the district is marked “Gun Safe” – it is a badge of honor that the community can proudly proclaim that they have engaged each household to ensure their either are no guns in the home, or any guns in the home are under safe keeping.

So how do we define “Gun Safe”?

Store Firearms Securely

Invest in a sturdy gun safe or lockbox to store firearms when they are not in use. Ensure that only authorized individuals have access to the keys or combinations.

Keep Firearms Unloaded

Always treat a firearm as if it is loaded, even if you believe it is not. Whenever handling or storing a firearm, ensure that it is unloaded.

Practice Proper Handling

Educate yourself and others in your household on how to safely handle firearms. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

Use Trigger Locks

Utilize trigger locks or cable locks to prevent unauthorized use of firearms. These locks prevent the firearm from being discharged and add an extra layer of security.

Ammunition Storage

Store ammunition separately from firearms, preferably in a locked container or safe. This prevents unauthorized access to live rounds and adds an additional safety measure.

Educate Children

Teach children about firearm safety from a young age. Emphasize that firearms are not toys and should never be handled without adult supervision.

Supervise Teenagers

If you have teenagers in the household who are learning to shoot, ensure they are always supervised by a responsible adult who can enforce safety rules.

Use Gun Safes for Display

If you choose to display firearms, ensure they are securely mounted on the wall or stored in a locked display case to prevent unauthorized access.

Regular Maintenance

Keep firearms clean and properly maintained to ensure they function safely and reliably.

Create an Emergency Plan

In the event of an emergency or break-in, have a plan in place for safely accessing and using firearms, if necessary.

Remember, responsible gun ownership is about more than just following rules; it’s about cultivating a culture of safety and respect for firearms within your household and community.

The Concept of Gun Safe Homes
